AC Freezing Up in Sharjah

Ice on an air conditioner sounds odd in the Sharjah heat, but it's a classic sign of restricted airflow or low gas.

Quick answer

An AC freezes up when the coil gets too cold, usually from restricted airflow (a clogged filter or dirty coil) or low refrigerant. Ice then blocks airflow completely and the unit drips as it melts. Turn it off to let it thaw, replace the filter, and get it checked - running it frozen can damage the compressor.

What problem are you having?

Pick the symptom and we'll bring the right parts and tools.

Why an AC ices over

The coil needs a steady flow of warm room air over it. Choke that flow with a dirty filter or coil and the coil drops below freezing, so moisture turns to ice.

Low refrigerant does the same thing from the other direction. Either way, the ice then blocks airflow entirely - and melting ice is a common cause of water leaks.

Likely causes

What could be behind it

The common causes we see - a technician confirms which on site.

Restricted airflow

A dirty filter or coil overcools and ices.

Coil cleaning

Low refrigerant

Low gas drops the coil temperature.

Gas refill

Weak blower

Not enough warm air over the coil.

AC repair

What our technician inspects

  • Airflow and filter/coil condition
  • Refrigerant charge
  • Blower operation
  • Drainage from melted ice
  • Any leak causing the low charge

What you can safely check yourself

  • Turn the AC off and let the ice fully melt
  • Wash or replace the filter
  • Make sure vents aren't blocked
  • Don't switch it back on while iced

Leave these to a technician

For your safety and to avoid damage, please don’t attempt these yourself:

  • Chipping ice off the coil
  • Running it to 'melt' the ice fast
  • Removing the compressor or fan motor
  • Any repair needing tools, gauges or parts

Frequently asked questions

Why is my AC freezing up?

Restricted airflow (dirty filter or coil) or low refrigerant makes the coil too cold and it ices over. We find which and correct it.

What do I do when I see ice on the AC?

Switch it off and let it thaw completely, then replace the filter. Don't run it frozen - book a check so it doesn't recur or harm the compressor.

Is a freezing AC linked to a water leak?

Yes - melting ice overwhelms the drain and drips indoors. Fixing the freeze usually fixes that leak too.
